If you have submitted a PCP claim, you should hear whether it was approved within 3 months of the relevant FCA scheme start date, especially if you complained early.
For many people, that means hearing by September or November 2026, depending on when your agreement started.
With so much attention on car finance compensation, one of the biggest questions people are asking is: how long does a PCP claim actually take to get approved?
The good news is that in 2026, the process is far clearer than it used to be, with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) setting clear timelines for when lenders have to respond to claimants and when pay-outs should be made.
However, with so much guidance around the process, navigating the system can feel overwhelming, especially if you have multiple claims to make.
That's where Claim-Smart can help. Our team are here to guide you through the process from start to finish. From pulling together documents to submitting the claim, we are with you every step of the way.
Plus, as we operate on a no-win, no-fee basis*, you only cover our fees if you get the compensation you deserve.

When you hear about your PCP claim depends on when your agreement started
The timing of hearing back about your PCP claim depends on when your finance agreement started. The FCA has announced two 'schemes' that each have their own deadlines around when claimants should hear back from lenders.
If your agreement started between 6 April 2007 and 31 March 2014, and you complain before 31 August 2026, you should hear back by 30 November 2026.
If your agreement started between 1 April 2014 and 1 November 2024, and you submit your complaint before 30 June 2026, you should hear back by 30 September 2026.
However, if you do not contact the lender yourself and decide to wait for them to contact you instead, hearing back will take a bit longer.
If you are unsure which of these categories your agreement falls into, you should be able to find it in your documents.
However, it's important to make sure you are eligible to apply in the first place, so we recommend reading our guide around what year you needed to buy a car to be eligible for mis-sold car finance.
Why do some people hear back about their PCP claim faster than others?
Some people hear back about their PCP claim faster than others because they complained early.
The FCA scheme is designed to prioritise people who complain before the official start dates. So, the best thing to do is take action early, as this means your claim is more likely to be reviewed faster and you could hear back within a few months.
If you wait for your lender to contact you instead, you can still receive compensation if you are eligible, but the process is normally quite a bit slower and could stretch into late 2026 or even 2027.
That is why many people are choosing to understand how to know if they were mis-sold car finance before deciding their next step.
What happens after you submit your PCP complaint?
Once you have submitted your complaint, the process follows a fairly clear structure.
First, your lender should acknowledge your complaint. Then they will review your agreement under the FCA’s redress scheme rules. Here, they will look at the documents to see whether commission arrangements were properly disclosed to you at the time. If they weren't, you are likely to be approved. If they were, they may dismiss your claim as you were informed of the rates at the time.
As part of the process, lenders will look at the documents you provide. While you can start a claim with some basic details, having the right paperwork can help you get an answer faster.

How long after approval do you get paid?
If your PCP claim is approved and you accept the offer, lenders should send you the money within one month.
In some cases, it may be quicker, but it will depend on how many claims the lender is dealing with at the time and what their internal payment processes are.
What if your PCP claim is rejected?
If your PCP claim is rejected, or you disagree with the amount offered, you still have options.
You may be able to escalate your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service. This can take longer, but it does give you an extra route to explore if you believe you have been denied compensation unfairly.
What can affect how quickly you hear back?
How quickly you hear back depends on whether there is any missing information in the claim and how many complaints the lender is dealing with at that specific time.
That's why submitting everything early is the best way to hear back quickly.
At Claim-Smart, we help clients pull together everything they need to avoid unnecessary delays in hearing back.
